Assignment 2A – Bug list
1.
The Pace clocks in the O’Dome swimming pool not being
in sync at opposite ends of the pool, so if you are doing laps on a time where
you end up at different ends, the interval is wrong.
Why it exists: Maybe
the clocks are not all linked up, but are programmed separately so they cannot
stay in sync.
2.
The Starbucks line in the Hub between morning class
periods.
Why it exists:
Many people get their coffee in between classes in the morning so the lines get
much longer then.
3.
Waiting for servers in restaurants to return with the check
when you are ready to pay.
Why it exists: They
are serving many people at once and could not be sure when you want your check,
maybe you want it just before you finish your meal so you can sign for it and
leave as soon as you are finished or maybe you do not mind waiting.
4.
Traffic lights that are activated by sensors but
sometimes do not pick up on scooters, specifically the one on SW 20th
Ave turning left onto 34th street.
Why it exists: Maybe
sensors buried in the pavement can not pick up on the light weight of scooters.
5.
The dryer taking longer to finish than the
washing machine, so if you are doing two loads, the second load of washing
stays wet in the washing machine until the first load is dry.
Why it exists: Drying
clothes takes longer than washing clothes.
6.
Waiting for a server to take your order when you
are ready at restaurants.
Why it exists: Servers
want to give customers enough time to look over the menu before they ask what
you would like, they also might be busy with other customers so take a while to
get to you.
7.
Scooters not starting in winter.
Why it exists: The
engine is too cold to start.
8.
Having to clean out lint from the dryer every
time it is used.
Why it exists:
Dryers can catch fire if lint builds up and you do not clean them out.
9.
Toilet sensors flushing before you are finished.
Why it exists: Toilet
sensors make it more sanitary so you do not have to touch anything, but
sometimes they also can pick up small movement and so flush too early.
10. Classrooms
that are very warm during winter so you have to remove all your winter
clothing.
Why it exists: So
that people are warm enough while in the classroom because it is cold outside.
11. Variable
weather in Gainesville, so that you have to take nearly two whole different
outfits for the day.
Why it exists: During
winter especially, Gainesville warms up a lot during the day when the sun is
out, compared to the night and morning.
12. Having
to unplug power cords from outlets if you do not want them to be on.
Why it exists:
Outlets do not have on and off switches, they just have the plug.
13. Having
to take the trash out of apartments, like West 20, and throwing it in a big garbage bin
outside.
Why it exists: Trash
is not removed from each apartment separately, it is only picked up from the
large garbage bin outside where everyone throws their trash.
14. Blocked
public toilets.
Why it exists: There
is not someone making sure that everybody puts the correct items in the toilet
and that everything gets flushed, so build ups can occur.
15. Scooter
batteries dying while driving, so having to get a scooter company (Campus
scooters) to pick up your scooter and replace the battery.
Why it exists:
People not knowing when to change the battery, so you must wait until it dies
and get it picked up.
16. Having
to go across the room to turn off the light.
Why it exists: Most
rooms only have one light switch that is fixed in place, so you must go across
the room to turn off the light.
17. How
packed the scooter parking gets on campus.
Why it exists: They
do not have enough space on campus to extend the scooter parking lots, so many
people try and fit into the small spot.
18. People
in cars hitting scooters.
Why it exists:
Scooters are not as visible as cars, and there are a lot of distractions in
this modern age.
19. Having
many different applications or social media platforms for communicating with
people, so you must check each different one separately for new messages.
Why it exists:
Not everyone has every form of social media and not all accounts can be linked.
20. Wi-Fi
in coffee shops not being able to load lectures.
Why it exists: A
lot of people try to do school work in coffee shops, which means a lot of
people are trying to access the Wi-Fi, therefore the internet would be slower
and may not be able to cope with so many people using it.
Reflection: When
I first started thinking about this assignment, I found it really difficult to
come up with even a few examples. After I started thinking about the little things
and analyzed everything I did in a day, more ideas came to mind. I thought
about everything I did in the morning and also about things that had bothered
me previously that I did not want to happen again. When I started thinking
about one bug, sometimes other relating bugs would come to mind as well, such
as thinking about winter, led to the cold, which led to thinking about how I get
cold getting to campus and also on campus, which led to problems with my scooter
as well as problems with clothing. The “why it exists” I found a little bit
trickier. This was because, in some cases, I did not know why it existed.
Sometimes it seemed that the bug could exist due to many different little
things.
Georgia, hi there! I'm Alyna. I'm also in your ENT3003. My mind worked the same way when it came to the bug list - one thought took me to the next which took me to the next. In an improv workshop I'm doing, we call that A to C thinking. You're very observant and brought up some good points about what day-to-day things don't function as effectively as they should. I specifically connected to the one in which you talk about the WiFi connection on campus. When I'm trying to access the internet while at UF campus, the connection is so slow due to the quantity of people on the server.
