My Entrepreneurship Story

Assignment 3A - My Entrepreneurship Story

While growing up in New Zealand, my father was always traveling for work. Every year for Easter we would travel down to Marlborough in the South Island. This time of year was harvest for winemakers. When I was younger, I did not really understand or ask questions as to why we had to go all the way to the South Island to visit the vineyard, or why my father was always traveling overseas. When I grew up, I learnt that my father was much more than just a winemaker. My grandfather started growing grapes in the region due to the optimum climate conditions. While doing this, he learnt about viticulture. My father went to Australia to study winemaking. When he returned, my father and grandfather, used their combined land and knowledge to start a winemaking company called Wither Hills. He gradually grew this business until he sold it. He then started a new, more family oriented winemaking company called Marisco Vineyards. The companies my father worked on grew to overseas markets due to the distinctiveness of the wine. My father wanted his company to stay in the family and luckily, my older sister grew interested in making wine. She followed my father’s footsteps and studied winemaking and viticulture in Australia. She is now assistant winemaker in the company.

I enrolled in ENT3003 as I am a horticulture science major but with my family background I wanted to understand more about being an entrepreneur and entrepreneurship in general. I have mostly focused on science based classes in high school and at college so far. Therefore, enrolling in this class, I wanted to broaden my knowledge, maybe to learn more about the business world, and possibly to introduce a new mindset.

  1. Hey Georgia. It's me again. I find it so interesting that you are from New Zealand. I'm from South Florida and this is my second year at UF. I'm studying advertising and painting, with a minor in Innovation. I find the following thought intriguing: Even though you didn't take on the wine business, you are studying a major that has to do with the science of plants. Was that intentional? Did you choose that wanting to join your family's business down the line? Do you want to start your own business?

  2. Hey Georgia, I find your story extremely interesting! I actually have some family in Melbourne, Australia so thats close enough. I really like the reason why you chose to take this class and I feel that this class will assist us in actually learning about ourselves and what we can accomplish whether it is in the business field or not.
