What's Your Secret Sauce?

Assignment 16A - What's Your Secret Sauce?

Five ways I have human capital that is unique:
1.     Time management: Swimmer years of being an athlete which has made me develop skills such as time management and organization.
2.     Commitment: Swimming is a hugely demanding sport and requires a lot of discipline. I have had to commit a lot of my time and energy to it.
3.     Courage: I have courage when pursing things, such as moving countries from New Zealand to living in America.
4.     Perspective: I grew up in the city but also saw part of the country, I have traveled to various countries and lived in two, this gave me a unique perspective of the world and cultures.
5.     Perfectionist: My passion to do my best in everything has led to me paying close attention to details.

Five people that know me the best:

1.     Luke, my boyfriend. Through Facetime.

Luke said that I was different because I was self motivated, even in hard times. He also said that I had good people skills and could listen to others opinions. I know that swimming has proved my motivation but I thought listening to others opinions was interesting because I did not realize that I do this, and this could be helpful in a business setting.

2.     Tim, my academic advisor, who I see regularly, and was one of the first people I met when I got to Florida.

Tim said that my ability to outwork others in every part of my life makes me different. He said that it can be a fault too, pushing myself as far as possible, sometimes meaning an inability to accept when don’t do well. After the interview, Tim also analyzed where he thought I got this from.

3.     Rosemary, my mother. Through Facetime.

Rosemary mentioned about me having a twin, which is unique. She also said that I catch on to things quickly, do things well. She said I have determination and focus. She also spoke about how I am fun and have sense of humor but I’m not sure if this is just a thing a mother says. She was honest about me sometimes being impatient under pressure but knowing when I’ve made mistakes so say sorry.

4.     Amelia, my best friend and roommate.

Amelia said that I am hard working, juggling everything with student athlete life. She also pointed out the idea that I was sometimes a “perfectionist.” She also said that I was passionate, independent being so far away from home, and committed. I found it interesting that she is person I spend my time with the most as I live with her and she reflected how I sometimes see myself.

5.     Emma, my sister. Through Facetime.

Emma reinforced that me moving over to the United States was straight out of school made me different. She said my ability to deal with this and balance swimming, school, and a social life, also made me different. Emma also emphasized my dedication to swimming.

Reflection
I believe these interviews were fairly accurate. I think that in relation to how swimming has developed me as a person my view and other people’s views are similar. Amelia said that I was good at juggling school and swimming which I think reflects my time management assessment in part one. I found it interesting that my best friend also noticed my ‘perfectionism’ characteristic. But both her and Tim saw it as more of a doing things to the best of my ability but also sometimes not being happy when it was not the best. Tim said that doing the best I can has come from my mother and the way she raised me which I believe is true because she is also like that and I admire it. I had not thought about my people skills and Luke mentioned that I have the ability to listen to people first before communicating my ideas. I believe that its hard for me to see this as this is mostly viewed in other people’s eyes. Most of my list from part one was reflected in my interviews, however, I would probably change perspective to independence, as this word might be more fitted for the living and traveling overseas away from my family. I would probably also add hard working after my interviews, which is similar to the commitment I mentioned. Emma said this as dedication. I also believe however, that my family is a bit biased towards qualities.

  1. Hi Georgia,
I like that you chose people who are close to you and know you really well so that you could get an accurate review. I wish I had more time to put in a bit more effort to get videos like you did. You sound like a very dedicated person and I think it's awesome you moved to the US straight out of school and shows that you are independent as your roommate said.
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. This is great. I love how all your interviewees align with what you yourself said about yourself, but in a way that was explained deeper with real life examples. It's neat to see you say a trait you believe you carry, and then hear your friends talk and share stories that act as proof of the traits you believed yourself to have. Actions talk louder than words, and your interviews are proof of your actions.

  3. i think that being self motivated and determined is a super important aspect of human capital. I think that it's important in every single thing we do in life. It's a great skill and attribute to be associated and I think about it pretty often. I like how this was a big aspect of your human capital just like it was for myself.
